Section 8 Housing Choice Voucher
FMHA administers 899 Section Eight Housing Choice
Vouchers, which pay federal rent subsidies to private property owners who rent to eligible
low-income households. FMHA is a consistent "high performer" under HUD's "Section 8 Management Assessment Program"
(SEMAP). In partnership with Fairfield County Job and Family Services, we serve 50
additional families with Family Unification Vouchers. HUD’s Family Unification Program
(FUP) is the only national housing program aimed at preventing family separation due to
homelessness and easing the transition to adulthood for aging-out youth.
Homeownership
Our Homeownership Vouchers assist first-time homeowners with their monthly homeownership expenses. The home must pass an initial housing quality standards
inspection conducted by the Housing Authority and an independent home inspection before
the PHA may approve the purchase by the family. This innovative new program promises to
fulfill the “American Dream”.
Family Self-Sufficiency
FMHA’s Family Self-Sufficiency Program encourages assisted
families to obtain employment that will lead to economic independence and self-sufficiency.
The Housing Authority works with human services agencies, schools, businesses, and other
local partners to develop a comprehensive program that gives participating FSS family
members the skills and experience to enable them to obtain employment that promotes self-
sufficiency.
Excellent Property Management and Maintenance
FMHA follows strict but fair
standards for screening new applicants and enforcing leases with residents. Residents are
held accountable for the upkeep of their units; and vacant units are prepared to high standards
for each new resident. All emergency work orders are performed within 24 hours, and
routine work orders in less than three days on average. All units are inspected at least twice
annually, and all meet local codes and HUD's standards. Excellent property management and
maintenance of Dragonfly Dreams Housing units help to maintain and improve the city's housing stock
and promote neighborhood stability.
